How long will Trump’s speech be tonight? These are the longest and shortest State of the Union addresses
Several Democratic lawmakers boycotted the event to protest Trump’s policies and held a rival rally on the National Mall, with rebuttals planned in English and Spanish.
- On Feb. 24, President Donald Trump delivered the State of the Union to a joint session of Congress, starting at 9 p.m. ET and lasting over an hour and 40 minutes.
- Several Democratic lawmakers skipped the chamber to hold a People's State of the Union rally on the National Mall, refusing to "legitimize" President Trump's remarks and citing protests and an alleged Epstein-files cover-up.
- According to the American Presidency Project, Bill Clinton's 2000 State of the Union was the longest at 1 hour 28 minutes 49 seconds, while Trump's addresses average 1 hour 20 minutes 20 seconds.
- Immediately after the speech, Democrats will air their rebuttal and a Spanish-language response by Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger and California Sen. Alex Padilla.
- The U.S. Constitution assigns presidents the duty to report the State of the Union, and the address lets him reset the agenda as polls show Americans feel worse off, NPR/PBS News/Marist found.
