Google Is Adding New Ways to Use AI Mode in Chrome

Google says the update reduces tab switching and lets users mix recent tabs, images and files into AI Mode searches.

  • On Thursday, Google launched a new Search experience in Chrome, upgrading its AI Mode to feature side-by-side browsing that helps users research without constantly switching tabs.
  • Launched last year as a chatbot-like search feature, AI Mode is evolving to reduce tab clutter. Chrome vice president Mike Torres described the updates as a broader effort to bring practical AI capabilities to the browser.
  • Clicking a link now opens the webpage alongside the AI chatbot, maintaining search context. This allows users to "visit relevant websites, compare details, and ask follow-up questions" without switching tabs.
  • Users can now search across open tabs, images, and files by selecting the new "plus" menu, enabling AI Mode to synthesize information from multiple sources for custom, context-aware responses.
  • Available now in the U.S. in English, the updates will expand to additional regions soon as Google aims to help users "stay focused on their tasks while exploring useful web pages.
