The killing of cartel leader El Mencho caused violent reprisals disrupting travel with over 139 flight cancellations at key airports, officials said.
- On Sunday, February 22, Mexican military officials killed Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, sparking chaos with roadblocks and violence in Mexico.
- The operation drew on U.S. intelligence support, officials said, and affected western Mexico, the Yucatán Peninsula, and border cities Tijuana and Reynosa.
- Residents reported car bombs going off one after another, with organized crime groups responding by setting vehicles on fire, blocking roads, and clashing with security forces, including the Mexican military.
- Many major carriers suspended flights through at least Tuesday, February 24, with FlightAware recording 74 cancellations at Puerto Vallarta International Airport and 65 at Guadalajara International Airport.
- Local authorities and businesses are preparing to resume operations, with 42% of flights at Licenciado Gustavo D�az Ordaz International Airport and 50% of local transportation services operating, aiming for full reopening by Wednesday.
