How Canadian agencies are embracing AI tools to defend national security
Canadian federal agencies use AI tools like face-matching and malware classification with human oversight to enhance security, according to a 2024 RCMP report.
- On Jan. 7, 2026, the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency began reviewing the use and governance of artificial intelligence by Canada’s security agencies, The Canadian Press first reported.
- Document search and monitoring tools such as Document Cracker help Global Affairs Canada officials quickly identify issues, formulate stances and track other countries, the federal AI register published last year says.
- CSIS will initiate a pilot early this year to test AI for transcribing, translating and a chatbot-style tool, while AI outputs undergo human review and Justice Department guidance.
- The RCMP warns of legal and ethical challenges and has established an AI policy and solutions team to draft frameworks, create working groups and help employees use new technologies.
- In the coming years, CSE expects AI to be more important for national security, with the federal passport program’s facial recognition and Transport Canada’s Risk Evaluation and Conflict Tool illustrating expanding operational AI use.
