German automaker BMW pulled out of the Russian market days after Moscow launched a full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022, but luxury SUVs assembled without BMW's permission are still being sold to wealthy and risk-averse Russians, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.
Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression, BMW has withdrawn from Russia. Nevertheless, cars from the manufacturer are still being built in Kaliningrad.
Following BMW's withdrawal from Russia in 2022, vehicles were produced at the Avtotor factory in Kaliningrad without the company's permission. Dubbed "pirate BMWs," 145 of these vehicles were sold last year. BMW has warned relevant authorities and customers about the unauthorized production.
