Principal Saved 900 Children Before His School Was Washed Away in Nepal
An accountant’s warning gave headmaster Rajendra Dawadi 14 minutes to evacuate the school before the flood destroyed the building.
- On Tuesday, Aug 26, Headmaster Rajendra Dawadi evacuated 900 students and 16 faculty members from Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School in Bidur, Nepal, minutes before a flash flood destroyed the building.
- The accountant received a warning from Rasuwa, providing just 14 minutes to evacuate. He shouted, "The flood is coming, the flood is coming," prompting Dawadi to order staff to "Stop the class, ring the bell."
- Over 900 of the school's roughly 1,600 students were on campus when the warning arrived. Parents and teachers used motorbikes and buses to reach safety, with Dawadi reporting at least one student fainted during the evacuation.
- Parents credited Headmaster Dawadi with saving their children. Meanwhile, the accountant's mother is missing after his house was washed away, and Dawadi recalled, "Our bus crossed the new bridge, the old bridge collapsed."
- The school no longer exists, its former location now inside the riverbed. Dawadi, once a student there himself, is urging authorities to rebuild the facility in a safe location as soon as possible.
