How a carjacking in Connecticut led back to a man known as the crypto ‘Godfather’ in California
Federal prosecutors say Adam Iza orchestrated the abduction to recover part of a $245 million Bitcoin theft, and six Florida men have already pleaded guilty.
- On Monday, California cryptocurrency mogul Adam Iza pleaded guilty to conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery, admitting he orchestrated a 2024 Connecticut kidnapping attempt to recover loot from a $245 million Bitcoin heist.
- Kidnappers pulled Sushil and Radhika Chetal from their Lamborghini SUV near Danbury High School on August 25, 2024, beating them and binding them with duct tape before police intervened after witnesses, including an off-duty FBI agent, reported the attack.
- The plot targeted the parents of Veer Chetal, whose son had stolen 4,100 Bitcoins worth $245 million from a Washington resident with two others; Iza recruited six Florida men to execute the abduction, paying for their travel and lodging.
- Federal prosecutors are seeking at least 14 years in prison for Iza, who also admitted to wire fraud, tax evasion, and stealing more than $37 million by fraudulently accessing business manager accounts of Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook.
- Iza, calling himself "The Godfather," operated from a Bel Air mansion and previously hired off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies to intimidate enemies, extort funds, and abuse the legal process, according to prosecutors.
