Houston shooting marks at least the 8th fatality in US immigration sweeps
The fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston by a federal immigration officer is at least the eighth death during the Trump administration's immigration enforcement campaign and the first since an intensified push for mass deportations.
Department of Homeland Security officials reported that Araujo, a Mexican national, ignored commands and tried to evade arrest during the enforcement operation.
Officials stated that Araujo attempted to ram his car into an agent, who then fired in self-defense.
Immigrant rights groups and some Democrats called for an independent investigation and the preservation of all footage, communication, and related evidence.
The shooting death of a Houston man at the hands of a federal immigration agent is at least the eighth death occurred during President Donald Trump's immigration control campaign, and the first death victim in the midst of a recently intensified drive by the government to carry out its massive deportation agenda.
