House Republicans launch probe into Maryland ballot issue ahead of primary
Officials said more than 500,000 replacement ballots are being mailed after voters in the state received the wrong party’s ballot.
- The Maryland State Board of Elections began resending more than 500,000 mail-in ballots statewide on Wednesday after a printing error caused voters to receive the incorrect party's ballot ahead of the June 23 gubernatorial primary.
- Two weeks ago, The Maryland State Board identified the vendor error when ballot envelopes and packets were being merged, prompting officials to replace all affected mail-in ballots to comply with state law.
- Voters must return replacement ballots by mail, at a drop box, or at a local board of elections; ballots will also be accepted during early voting and on Election Day.
- Political science professor Ian Anson of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Institute of Politics said the situation was " a bit of an awkward issue, right? Obviously, something that no one wanted to happen," but safeguards ensure election integrity.
- By Wednesday, all replacement batches were en route to voters across the state, allowing residents to track their ballot status online to verify the Board has appropriately received them.
