JUST IN: House Of Reps Extends 2025 Capital Budget Implementation To December 31
The extension gives federal agencies three more months to fund and complete capital projects under the 2025 budget, lawmakers said.
- On Tuesday, the House of Representatives approved extending the 2025 Appropriation Act capital implementation deadline from September 30 to December 31, 2026. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu announced passage after lawmakers gave overwhelming support through voice vote.
- Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere moved the motion, citing that the capital component of the 2025 budget had not been fully implemented due to economic difficulties. President Bola Tinubu's executive request sought additional time for federal agencies to complete critical infrastructure projects.
- Lawmakers passed the amendment bill through accelerated first and second readings to prevent abandonment of ongoing capital projects due to funding bottlenecks. The Committee of Supply reviewed it clause by clause before the bill received third reading approval.
- Federal ministries, departments and agencies now have until December 31, 2026, to fully disburse and execute capital allocations under the 2025 Appropriation Act. This provides three additional months to address funding and implementation challenges affecting ongoing projects.
- This marks the fourth extension of the capital implementation deadline since the original December 31, 2025, expiration date. Previous shifts moved deadlines to March 31, June 30, and September 30, 2026, reflecting persistent implementation challenges within the original budget cycle.
