VA, CMS Plan to Recover $106 Million in Duplicate Billings
VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES, JUL 23 – A House subcommittee found $341 million in undocumented VA incentive payments from 2020 to 2023, with retention bonuses increasing 131% and recruitment bonuses up 237%.
- On July 22, 2025, the House Committee on Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations questioned tens of millions of dollars in undocumented incentive payments.
- Before the hearing, the Department of Government Efficiency found the VA paid hundreds of thousands monthly for website changes before canceling the contract and shifting work to an internal staffer.
- The committee found $1.2 billion in incentive payments during that period and the VA Office of Inspector General reported $341 million lacked documentation as relocation grew 85%, retention 131% and recruitment 237%.
- Following the hearing, VA and CMS established a data-matching agreement to flag duplicate claims and will send bills to overpaid providers to recover improper payments.
- Additionally, federal officials said recovery efforts will redirect taxpayer funds towards veterans and Medicare benefits.
