House Democrat: Platner’s tattoo should be ‘disqualifying’
Auchincloss said Platner’s explanation for the Nazi tattoo scandal is personally disqualifying as Democrats rally behind the Maine Senate hopeful.
- On Monday, Rep. Jake Auchincloss told CNN he views Graham Platner's Nazi tattoo as "personally disqualifying" for Maine's U.S. Senate race, calling his commentary about it equally problematic.
- Platner received the Nazi SS Totenkopf tattoo in Croatia in 2007 while on shore leave with fellow Marines; he has since covered it and denied knowingly displaying Nazi imagery, saying he did not understand its meaning at the time.
- Auchincloss had previously urged Platner to drop out in October, arguing that the oyster farmer’s Bernie Sanders- and Elizabeth Warren-backed brand would not win Democratic majorities nationwide.
- On Tuesday, Auchincloss denied his remarks endorsed Platner's opponent, citing his "track record supporting Democrats to take back both chambers," but labor leaders questioned whether his Majority Democrats chairmanship conflicts with opposing the presumptive nominee.
- Platner has gained endorsements from multiple U.S. senators and outraised both Mills and Collins, while Auchincloss prepares for his own September 1 primary against AI researcher Jason Poulos, who highlights Auchincloss's $230 million in pro-Israel lobby donations.
