Heatwave 'Extremely Likely' in Coming Days - Met Éireann
Met Éireann said the heat will build through Friday, with 13 water supplies under night-time restrictions as temperatures rise.
Met Eireann forecasts temperatures could reach up to 30C in the South this weekend, extending a prolonged hot spell across Ireland. Weather bosses confirmed the mercury will remain in the high 20s before possibly "reaching 30 degrees in some places this weekend."
A "ridge of high pressure is currently situated over Ireland, extending from an anticyclone over the Azores," causing the hot spell. Forecasters anticipate meeting the official heatwave threshold, requiring five consecutive days above 25C.
Water demand reached about 680 million litres on warm days, around 40 million litres above average, Uisce Eireann reports. The utility placed night-time restrictions on 13 water supplies out of more than 700 to protect local capacity.
Met Eireann warned of "uncomfortable conditions, particularly at night" due to the heat. Margaret Attridge, head of water operations with Uisce Eireann, advised swimmers to choose lifeguarded beaches, warning that reservoirs are not safe places to swim.
The hot weather is expected to continue through the remainder of the week, with much of next week looking very warm and sunny. The Weather Channel noted potential agricultural impacts as temperatures reach into the high 20s to low 30s.
