- The Egyptian presidency says the summit aims to end the Gaza Strip war, enhance peace and stability after a conflict that began on Oct. 7, 2023, with Hamas attacks killing 1,139 people and capturing about 200 hostages.
- In two rounds, seven then thirteen hostages were handed over to the Israeli Defence Forces, while Israel approved releasing 1,718 Palestinian prisoners and expects 28 deceased hostages' bodies.
- With both sides absent, the ceasefire now rests with Egypt, Qatar and Trump, while Hamas resists disarmament and far-right members of Netanyahu's coalition warn a withdrawal could collapse Israel's government.
