Horry County man dies in prison while serving life sentence for death of estranged wife
The South Carolina Department of Corrections said an autopsy will be performed after the 66-year-old died following an extended illness.
- On Monday, 66-year-old South Carolina death row inmate Louis Michael Winkler Jr. died at Kirkland Correctional Institution following an extended illness.
- Winkler was convicted in the 2006 murder of his estranged wife, Rebecca Grainger Winkler, after kicking in her door and shooting her in the face in front of her teenage son.
- Although originally sentenced to death in 2008, a Georgetown County judge overturned the sentence in 2012, converting it to life in prison.
