Ukrainian eye doctor training in Calgary to better help wounded

Dr. Pavla Ivaniuta is advancing her skills to treat severe war-related eye injuries and will share knowledge with Ukrainian colleagues after her fellowship.

  • Pavla Ivaniuta, a 26-year-old Ukrainian eye doctor, is participating in a six-month humanitarian fellowship at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine and is four months into the program.
  • The Russian invasion of Ukraine produced battlefield eye trauma, and four years into the war, Ivaniuta says improving her surgical skills best helps wounded patients often needing partial or full eye removal.
  • Punja, who instructs at the University of Calgary, said `It's a state of crisis where they have to deal with regular diseases like we do in Canada, but with an insurmountable amount of trauma and injury that would be soul crushing to deal with that kind of a workload`.
  • The program includes remote study and return visits to Calgary to finish training, and after she returns, Dr. Karim Punja is scheduled to join her in Ukraine for two weeks to assist with surgeries.
  • Amid logistical hurdles, the program aims to build local surgical capacity by training Ukrainian doctors who can return and help address the country's eye specialist shortage, organizers said.
