Honda Recalls Nearly 99,000 Vehicles over Air Bag Defect
Honda dealers will replace the faulty sensor free of charge after NHTSA said the defect could trigger unexpected air bag deployment.
On Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Honda is recalling 98,892 vehicles due to a faulty front passenger-seat weight sensor that could cause unintentional airbag deployment, posing a significant safety risk.
American Honda stated "improper software programming by a supplier" caused the sensor failure, which can crack after humidity exposure and short-circuit, risking improper airbag deployment during crashes.
Nearly 99,000 vehicles are included in the recall, spanning 2016-2026 Honda and Acura models like the Accord, Honda Odyssey, and Honda Pilot, which carry injury risks if airbags deploy while an infant or child is present.
Honda and Acura dealers will replace the defective seat weight sensors at no cost, with owner notification letters expected to be mailed beginning July 6, following dealer notifications that began May 22.
This action marks Honda's largest recall since 2025, when the company addressed a separate software error affecting over 256,600 Accord Hybrid vehicles nationwide that could result in sudden loss of drive power.
Honda's HR-V, Fit, CR-V Hybrid and Civic models are among those with problems, as are Chrysler's (Stellantis) Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L vehicles.
