Holmstrom Scores 2 as Islanders Race to an Early Lead, Hold on to Beat Flames 3-2
Simon Holmstrom scored twice, including a short-handed goal, as the Islanders secured their third win in four games with David Rittich making 30 saves.
On Saturday, the New York Islanders defeated the Calgary Flames 3-2 at UBS Arena, marking their third win in four games.
Holmstrom gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead at 16:35 of the first period, then Jean-Gabriel Pageau set up a short-handed goal extending the lead to 3-0 before Flames goaltender Devin Cooley allowed three goals on 10 shots.
Casey Cizikas also scored for New York, while Islanders goaltender David Rittich made 30 saves to preserve the victory; Dustin Wolf relieved Cooley and finished with 17 saves for Calgary.
Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman scored during a 6:11 third-period stretch to pull Calgary within a goal, though the loss dropped the Flames to 2-5-1 in their last eight games.
The Flames visit the Detroit Red Wings on Monday to conclude their five-game trip, while the Islanders begin a three-game road trip visiting the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
