Hollywood shaken by Brad Pitt-Tom Cruise fight video made with Chinese AI

The Motion Picture Association says ByteDance's Seedance 2.0 engaged in massive unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works, with one video reaching over 1.2 million views in 48 hours.

  • ByteDance's Seedance 2.0 launched on Thursday and quickly spread a viral Tom Cruise vs. Brad Pitt deepfake and other user-created videos on social platforms.
  • Without meaningful guardrails, Seedance 2.0 combines audio and video to produce cinematic deepfakes that disregard copyright law and eliminate the need for human performers and crews.
  • The Motion Picture Association said the model engaged in unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works and called on ByteDance to cease its infringing activity.
  • On Friday, SAG-AFTRA, which represents 160,000 members, said `This is unacceptable and undercuts the ability of human talent to earn a livelihood.`
  • Longer term, Seedance may force studios into licensing or legal action as AI remains a top SAG-AFTRA priority for 2026 talks, shown by Disney's $1 billion deal with OpenAI.
