Inside Hayden Panettiere’s Troubling Final Months After a Life in the Spotlight
Neutrogena said it failed to support Panettiere after canceling her contract as she spoke publicly about postpartum depression.
Hayden Panettiere, the 36-year-old actress best known for "Heroes" and "Nashville," died Sunday, August 16, in Greenville, South Carolina. Medics responded to a 911 call at 1:51 p.m. and pronounced her dead at 2:32 p.m.
Days after her death, Neutrogena apologized Thursday for terminating Panettiere's contract in 2015 after she publicly discussed postpartum depression. The beauty company acknowledged it failed to support her during a difficult time.
Recalling her early career, Panettiere told People that team members offered her "happy pills" before red carpets "to make me peppy during interviews" when she was 15. The pressure began in childhood.
The Drug Enforcement Administration joined the investigation Thursday as partner Wladimir Klitschko stated the family is "going through a time of profound shock and grief" while processing her death. Authorities have not disclosed the cause.
Panettiere's death follows other recent losses involving young performers, prompting reflections on industry pressures that shaped her generation. She had previously discussed the challenges faced by former child stars in a 2013 interview.
