Hockey fever reaches Montrealers experiencing homelessness
About two dozen residents gathered in cafeterias and lounges, and some shelters extended curfews so fans would not miss overtime.
On Tuesday night, about two dozen residents at Montreal's Old Brewery Mission gathered in the cafeteria to watch Game 4 of the Canadiens' second-round playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres, breaking into chants as the team took the lead.
Lifelong Canadiens fan Stephane Vallieres, who has resided at the Mission since September, watched alongside his friend Allen Hayward, who has lived there for four years after losing his construction job during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shuttle driver Yolette Jean reported few riders Tuesday as residents prioritized watching, while Mission director James Hughes said the first thing he heard was, "It's going to be 4-2 tonight! It's all anyone's talking about."
Shelters including CAP St-Barnabé and the Welcome Hall Mission reported residents hosting viewing parties, prompting CEO Sam Watts to extend the 10 p.m. curfew to ensure residents would not miss potential overtime.
For isolated Montrealers struggling with loss, shared hockey nights provide critical emotional relief and a social outlet that has encouraged shelter operators to adjust programming and support resident wellbeing.
