Hockey Canada parts with women’s GM, coach

A search committee will pick a new GM and coach as Hockey Canada adapts to PWHL expansion and a November world championship.

  • Hockey Canada announced Tuesday that general manager Gina Kingsbury will not return after eight years overseeing the national women's team, with head coach Troy Ryan also departing by mutual agreement as contracts expire in June.
  • Canada fell 2-1 in overtime to the United States on February 19 in Milan, Italy, marking an eighth straight loss to its archrival and ending a successful era under Kingsbury and Ryan that included Olympic gold in 2022 and world championship titles in 2021, 2022 and 2024.
  • The PWHL's rapid expansion has pulled experienced leaders from Hockey Canada; Ryan was recently hired as head coach and GM of San Jose's expansion team, while Meghan Duggan, Manon Rheaume and Dominique DiDia took GM roles in Hamilton, Detroit and Las Vegas respectively.
  • Hockey Canada CEO Katherine Henderson said the organization must operate "probably closer to how we put together our men's senior teams," stating "We want to contend for a medal at every single international event we play and preferably the colour is gold."
  • Kori Cheverie and Caroline Ouellette emerge as leading coaching candidates after Ryan mentioned them as top prospects; Cheverie won PWHL coach of the year and led Montreal Victoire to the franchise's first Walter Cup, while Ouellette has coached at Concordia University.
