New York Declares Disaster Emergency over Measles Outbreak
The order adds paramedics, pharmacists and midwives to vaccinator ranks as New York reports 108 measles cases this year, officials said.
On Monday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State Disaster Emergency to strengthen measles response efforts, authorizing an expanded network of healthcare professionals to administer vaccines and testing across the state.
New York has recorded 108 confirmed measles cases this year, with 92 infections occurring in 18 under-immunized rural counties since July 15, nearly double last year's total and prompting the governor's emergency response.
The executive order authorizes paramedics, advanced EMS providers, midwives, and pharmacists to administer the MMR vaccine, while also permitting nurses to order testing to support community partners addressing disease spread.
State Health Department Commissioner Dr. James McDonald urged New Yorkers to verify their vaccination status, while the state launched a Measles Dashboard to track local risks and inform residents of outbreak areas.
Amid a national and global surge, the CDC reports 3,887 cases across the U.S., with the MMR vaccine remaining 97 per cent effective after two doses despite declining nationwide vaccination rates.
