Nebraska Senate Race Has Seen Tough Talk and Shifts on Immigration
A Republican-aligned super PAC has reserved more airtime than any other advertiser as GOP leaders try to blunt Osborn’s independent challenge.
- Last week, a Republican-aligned super PAC launched attack ads against independent Senate candidate Dan Osborn in Nebraska, reserving more airtime than any other advertiser in the race according to ad-tracking firm AdImpact.
- Osborn's near-upset in 2024, finishing within 7 points despite no Democratic opponent, prompted Democrats to step aside and endorse him this year—a reversal from losing by nearly 40 points in the previous Senate race.
- Audio from this summer captured Osborn calling Trump's border wall "a symbol of racism" and saying Trump supporters backed the president "because their lives probably suck." Jim Kessler, executive vice president at Third Way, called the tapes "a proof point on the Republican side."
- Rather than dispute the recordings, Osborn told CNN he "would apologize to those people that might be offended" and emphasized his working-class background against opponent Ricketts, whose family made its fortune with brokerage TD Ameritrade and controls the Chicago Cubs.
- Senator John Kennedy campaigned in Nebraska on Sunday with Osborn's opponent, Senator Pete Ricketts , saying he didn't expect to campaign in such a red state this year, as both candidates focus on immigration ahead of the November 3 general election.
