HMRC Child Benefit boost lands in accounts but some families are missing out
The higher rates add up to £1,406 a year for the first child, and HMRC says 6.9 million families are now receiving them.
- HM Revenue and Customs confirmed that more than 6.9 million families receiving Child Benefit are now being paid at new higher rates, effective from April 6.
- Weekly payments rose to £27.05 for the eldest or only child and £17.90 for each additional child, giving families up to £1,406 annually for their first child.
- Only 72% of parents claim Child Benefit within their baby's first year, yet claims can only be backdated for three months, risking financial loss for delayed applicants.
- Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's chief customer officer, urged families to claim digitally, noting around 85% of submissions use the app: "Looking after a child can be expensive, especially a newborn."
- Anna Sharkey from the Pensions Service recommends using the free Benefits Calculator via MoneyHelper to verify eligibility, particularly for those earning over £60,000 subject to the High Income Child Benefit Charge.
