Historic move by EPA to end animal testing by 2035

EPA will use computer modeling and in vitro tests through a three-pronged strategy to reduce animal testing and has already cut lab rodents by over 90%, agency said.

  • On Thursday, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the Environmental Protection Agency is reinstating the 2035 deadline to phase out mammal testing, a target set under President Donald Trump and removed under President Biden.
  • The shift reflects arguments that NAMs are faster, cheaper, and more predictive; `many of which have already been shown to be equal to or more predictive than the animal testing development more than a half a century ago,` said Dr. Amy Clippenger with PETA, aligning with the Make America Healthy Again agenda.
  • According to the EPA’s Office of Applied Science and Environmental Solutions, rodent populations in their care declined significantly last year, and the agency estimates this spared roughly 1,600 mice and rats.
  • Implementing the plan, the EPA will use a three-pronged strategy to identify alternatives, review federal codes, and encourage external researchers to apply for testing waivers.
  • All three animal-rights groups attended Thursday's announcement with Oliver, rescued beagle, while Americans for Medical Progress urged validated methods and regulatory flexibility to avoid safety gaps.
