The first nine months of 2026 were exceptionally dry in Hungary, as this year was the driest January-September period on record since 1901, and September itself was the seventh driest on record. In addition to the historic drought, the early autumn month also brought unusually warm weather, according to a Facebook post by HungaroMet Nonprofit Zrt.
September precipitation was also extremely low: in many places in the Great Plain, less than 10 millimeters fell, and the annual precipitation amount is at a record low.
Since regular measurements began in 1901, no drought comparable to this has been experienced in the first nine months of the year.
This year was the driest period from January to September in Hungary since 1901, HungaroMet reported.
