Historic Barkerville Businesses Enter New Era Under Lhtako Dene Nation
The transfer gives the First Nation control of five retail businesses and keeps longtime employees in place, officials said.
On May 8, the Barkerville Heritage Trust announced the Lhtako Dene Nation will take over several historic businesses, ending the Rummel family's decades-long presence at Barkerville Historic Town & Park.
Since at least 1980, the Rummel family managed Mason & Daly General Merchants, C. Strouss Drygoods & Provisions, and Eldorado Gold Panning & Gift Shop across the site.
Rocky Nenka, a former BHT commerce manager, will oversee operations for the Lhtako Dene Nation, with longtime employees expected to remain to maintain continuity in quality and visitor experience.
Barkerville sits along the historic Grease Trail, an extensive Indigenous trade network connecting the Interior with the Pacific coast, reinforcing the First Nation's role in the region's reconciliation.
Lhtako Dene Nation Chief Clifford Lebrun stated the transition offers opportunities to create jobs and tell a fuller story of the Cariboo, building a future rooted in mutual respect.
