Volunteers rescue climber stranded on small ledge in California’s Sierra Nevada
A four-person volunteer team used technical rescue training to reach Rob Martin, who was stranded on a 6-inch ledge with thousands of feet below.
- Volunteers from the Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue Team completed a 15-hour operation last weekend to rescue a stranded climber near Mammoth Lakes, California, in the Sierra Nevada.
- Climber Rob Martin became stranded in a precarious gully after getting off route, with only one foot fully on a 6-inch ledge, said Mitchell Quiring, part of the rescue team.
- Rescuers faced thousands of feet of vertical exposure during the operation. The Rescue Team noted on their Facebook page that any fall would almost certainly be fatal.
- Crediting Martin's strength and will to survive, team spokesperson Mitchell Quiring said, "He was going to push until there was a solution." Quiring emphasized the climber's determination.

A mountain climber got into serious trouble during a trek through the Sierra Nevada in California after losing his way. The man managed to stay standing for hours on a ledge barely 15 centimeters wide until volunteer rescuers managed to reach him in the middle of the night.
