Hiker in Critical Condition After Being Stung More than 100 Times by Bees in Arizona
Crews used a helicopter to hoist the man off the mountain after he said he was stung more than 100 times, officials said.
- On Saturday, a hiker was airlifted from Lookout Mountain in north Phoenix after being stung over 100 times by bees, according to the Phoenix Fire Department. He was transported in critical condition.
- Africanized bees, present in Arizona since the 1950s, are particularly aggressive this season; Busy Bee Pest Solutions owner Shaun Cutrona noted colonies are larger and more aggressive than expected. The busy season started earlier than usual this year.
- Rescuers treated the man with medication and IV fluids before the Phoenix Firebird helicopter hoisted him off the mountain. Although he remained alert and speaking, officials noted his blood pressure was dangerously low.
- Emergency physician and Arizona State University professor Dr. Frank Lovecchio explained that bee venom causes muscle breakdown, which can create serious complications. He advised victims to "keep your mouth shut, cover your mouth, and run as fast as you can."
- Experts advise wearing lightly colored clothing and avoiding scents when hiking to deter bees. This incident follows a March 29 swarm at Arizona State University that stung five people, sending one to the hospital.
