High school senior in Florida killed in crash hours before graduation
Authorities said Christopher Brooks, 18, failed to slow for stopped traffic and died on impact, prompting the school to keep graduation but in a somber tone.
South Fork High School senior Christopher Brooks died in a car crash Thursday while driving to graduation practice, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office.
Around 8:30 a.m., Brooks was traveling northbound on SW Pratt Whitney Road when he failed to slow down for stopped traffic and rear-ended a dump truck at the intersection with SW Bulldog Way.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek stated investigators believe Brooks may have been distracted, though the specific cause remains unclear. Brooks was a lifelong Martin County student enrolled in the district since kindergarten.
Scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, the graduation ceremony will proceed as planned, though Martin County School District Chief of Staff Jennifer DeShazo said the event will "take on a much more somber tone."
Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash, while the Martin County School District is providing counseling services and has canceled Project Graduation in response to the tragedy.
