Archaeologist: "1200 years that are a bit tricky to get a grip on"
Archaeologists have discovered evidence of an 8,000-year-old community on the shores of Lake Ohrid
8000 years ago, people in Albania built houses on stilts, fished and farmed. Now, researchers have found the remains of the settlements – they are the oldest in Europe.
According to Albert Hafner of the University of Bern, similar settlements discovered in the Alps and the Mediterranean are about half a millennium younger.
A team of Albanian and Swiss archaeologists have discovered the remains of a hunting and farming community at the bottom of Lake Ohrid, believed to have lived 8,000 years ago. This means it may be the oldest settlement in Europe. Researchers have discovered wooden pillars, animal bones, tools, copper objects and ceramics with detailed carvings about three meters underwater.
