Pierce County Mom Charged with Attempted Murder After Rollover, Alleged Attacks on Daughters
Prosecutors say Janieka Amber Marie Ellington faces four attempted murder counts after crashing her SUV and threatening to kill her daughters.
On Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, 35-year-old Janieka Amber Marie Ellington crashed her SUV near mile marker 118 on I-5 and now faces four counts of attempted first-degree murder following a stabbing incident.
Washington State Patrol investigators reported the SUV was driving erratically before striking a concrete barrier; Ellington told troopers she had been drinking whiskey, was driving without sleep, and believed she was being followed.
Three Good Samaritans, including two soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, intervened to disarm Ellington after she chased her teenage daughter with a knife, leaving both girls aged nine and 15 in stable condition.
Pierce County prosecutors filed formal charges on Tuesday, noting domestic violence enhancements and aggravating circumstances; under Washington law, the attempted murder counts carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and up to a $50,000 fine.
Sgt. Ricardo A. Nunez, a 7th Infantry Division soldier, said, "I just did my part," while Washington State Patrol Sgt. John Dattilo credited the soldiers' intervention: "If that hadn't happened, we don't know what the outcome would be.
