Health Minister Sophie Hermans advises people to protect themselves against mosquitoes if they want to prevent becoming infected with the West Nile virus. At least nine people have contracted the virus this year, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported on Thursday.
West Nile virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, has become a silent but persistent threat in temperate climate zones, including our region. While the vast majority of infected people never develop symptoms, a minority face severe neurological consequences, and climate change only favors its further spread.
