Here’s a Look at the Ridings Where Voters Can Expect Federal Byelections Soon
Thirteen MPs have stepped down since the 2025 election, and byelections could stretch into 2027 under Commons rules.
In the 17 months since the 2025 election, 13 of 343 members of Parliament have resigned, necessitating a wave of federal byelections across Canada.
When a seat in the House of Commons becomes vacant, the prime minister must call an election between 11 and 180 days after the resignation, with campaigns lasting between 36 and 50 days.
Conservative Larry Brock resigned from Brantford-Brant South on Sept. 18, while Liberal Shaun Chen left Scarborough North on Aug. 15; Conservative Scott Aitchison plans to leave Parry Sound-Muskoka after the House session concludes on Dec. 11.
Additional departures include NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice of Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie and Bloc MP Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay of Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton, who both stepped down in late summer and June respectively.
The government faces tight deadlines for calling these contests, with several byelections required by early 2027 to fill the parliamentary gaps created by the departures.
