The coalition parties had agreed not to increase the mortgage interest deduction. However, due to a linkage, this happens automatically anyway.
A majority of the House of Representatives does not want the mortgage interest deduction to be expanded. GroenLinks-PvdA and coalition parties D66 and CDA, among others, are asking the cabinet to do so. The VVD voted against the proposal.
The mortgage interest deduction stands firm, despite the multi-billion euro problem looming over the dossier. Minister Heinen (Finance) makes this assurance: "Agreements have been made regarding that." Meanwhile, D66 and CDA are asking the cabinet to prevent an expansion of the deduction.
