Simple Thing Everyone with a Garden Can Do to Help Hedgehogs in the Summer
SOUTHEND, UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 15 – Southend Council plans grants and design changes to restore hedgehog travel routes and habitats amid a 30-75% rural population decline since 2000, officials said.
- The ‘Go WILD for Hedgehogs’ campaign launched this summer by Hedgehog Street and wildlife charities encourages people to leave a wild, undisturbed garden patch.
- This initiative addresses the dramatic reduction in hedgehog populations, which have declined from approximately 30 million in the 1950s to fewer than one million today, primarily due to the loss of their natural habitats.
- The campaign and experts advise leaving garden areas wild without mowing or chemicals and suggest adding fresh water sources like ponds or water dishes to support hedgehog survival.
- Green Party councillor Stuart Allen expressed his satisfaction that the Hedgehog Highways proposal, which was introduced to the council in March, is now receiving favorable consideration from the cabinet.
- Local councils intend to partner with the Essex Wildlife Trust and community organizations to encourage hedgehog-friendly features in new housing projects and help increase local hedgehog numbers.
