Heathrow Airport Issues Warning as It Faces Impact of Middle East War
Heathrow said 18.9 million passengers passed through its terminals in the first quarter as Middle East airspace disruptions shifted demand.
- Heathrow warned the war in the Middle East will impact passenger numbers this year. The airport said, "passenger numbers for the rest of the year are likely to be impacted whilst there is significant uncertainty in the Middle East."
- Following the war in the Middle East, airspace closures disrupted air travel starting February 28. Much of the region's airspace has since reopened, but many travelers are avoiding flying there because of the conflict.
- Some 18.9 million people passed through the airport's four terminals during the first three months of the year, a 3.7% increase. However, adjusted operating costs were 6.5% higher, driven by wages and IT investments.
- Chief financial officer Sally Ding said Heathrow is currently "full," meaning "fewer choices and higher fares for passengers, and missed opportunities for the UK economy."
- Ding declared the airport is ready to build a third runway "with the right regulatory framework and Government policy in place." This expansion would address current capacity constraints.
