Electricity demand breaks record amid heat wave, BC Hydro says
The utility said 12 of 46 active outages were planned as cooling centers opened for residents without power or air conditioning.
BC Hydro reported a new all-time summer peak electricity demand of 8,715 megawatts between 5 and 6 p.m., surpassing the previous record set in August 2025.
Nearly 70 percent of British Columbia households now have air conditioning, making cooling a major factor in increased summer electricity use, according to BC Hydro.
