GREECE, JUL 22 – Greek authorities halted outdoor labor and closed the Acropolis during peak heat hours as temperatures reached up to 43°C, marking the country’s third heatwave this summer.
- Temperatures above 40°C prompted labourers to pause outdoor work on July 22, and the Greek meteorological service said the heatwave will continue until July 27.
- In recent years, Greece has experienced longer and more severe heatwaves, and last year was the warmest on record globally with temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
- Authorities in Bulgaria urged businesses to give away water and cut physical labour during high-risk hours, and Greek couriers, food delivery riders and builders were ordered to pause work from midday until 5pm, as the labour ministry said.
- Thousands were evacuated and dozens injured in wildfires across France, Spain, and Greece, and firefighters in Albania, assisted by aircraft from Italy and Greece, battled two wildfires at a national park and near Dukat.
- The heat is expected to ease from Sunday, as the Greek meteorological service forecasts; meanwhile, fire services and labourers prepare for continued high temperatures and safety measures.
