Teen Hiker Dies From Heat-Related Illness at Grand Canyon National Park
Park officials said the 18-year-old was attempting a day hike and rescue efforts failed after heat-related distress on the Bright Angel Trail.
An 18-year-old hiker died on Wednesday, June 3, after suffering from a "heat related illness" while hiking the Bright Angel Trail near Havasupai Gardens, according to the National Park Service.
National Park Service rangers responded to reports at 1:40 p.m. and located the individual about 30 feet below the trail in a remote section near Garden Creek.
Temperatures in the Grand Canyon basin can reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and federal data shows that approximately 17 people die in the Grand Canyon every year.
The incident remains under investigation by the Coconino County Medical Examiner, following two other hiker collapses on the Bright Angel Trail in July 2025.
Hikers are advised to avoid strenuous activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and carry adequate water and electrolytes to prevent heat-related emergencies, according to the National Park Service.
