Taliban Orders Government Employees to Stop Using Smartphones
Government workers across Afghanistan were told to stop using smartphones, with exemptions allowed only by the supreme leader and penalties reported in some provinces.
Government employees across Afghanistan began switching off smartphones on Wednesday, following a decree from Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada banning the devices in all offices, AFP reported.
Taliban authorities have ruled for five years under strict interpretations of Islamic law, and last year unexpectedly cut internet and phone networks nationwide for two days.
Staff in remote Badakhshan face up to six months in prison for carrying smartphones, while teachers described the decision as "truly heartbreaking," noting they rely on WhatsApp groups to track classroom problems.
In Ghazni, situated between Kabul and Kandahar, official Irfan Andarh notified staff that employees would be available "via telephone calls and email," though some central departments continued publishing through digital platforms.
Government workers warned the shift will hinder essential operations, such as using digital tools to translate between Dari and Pashto, while exemptions can only be granted by the Supreme Leader.
