New form of type 1 diabetes identified in Black patients

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA, JUL 24 – A study of 894 African youth found 65% diagnosed with type 1 diabetes lacked autoimmune markers, indicating a non-immune diabetes subtype needing tailored treatment.

  • Published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology today, an international team identified a non-autoimmune form of type 1 diabetes in children and young adults across Cameroon, Uganda and South Africa.
  • Because 65% of participants lacked islet autoantibodies, the research challenges the autoimmune assumption underlying classic type 1 diabetes.
  • Using consistent lab tests and genetic tools across three African countries, the study found 15% of Black Americans exhibited the same non-autoimmune diabetes subtype.
  • Dana Dabelea said `This suggests that many young people in this region have a different form of T1D altogether and is not autoimmune in origin,` and these findings could change how diabetes is diagnosed, treated and managed across the region.
  • Researchers say this discovery could change how type 1 diabetes is diagnosed and managed in individuals of African descent, and Dana Dabelea notes `The identification of this T1D diabetes subtype … suggests a potential ancestral or genetic link.
