Health Canada approves drug that treats hot flashes for use by breast cancer patients
The non-hormonal drug cut daily hot flashes and night sweats in a 395-patient trial, giving women on endocrine therapy another option.
- Health Canada expanded market authorization for Elinzanetant, also known as Lynkuet, to treat moderate to severe hot flashes in breast cancer patients, effective Friday.
- Breast cancer patients often endure endocrine therapy for up to 10 years, causing debilitating vasomotor symptoms; Dr. Christine Brezden-Masley of Sinai Health noted patients previously lacked effective options because traditional hormone replacement therapy is generally unsuitable.
- The Phase 3 OASIS-4 trial, sponsored by Bayer, studied 395 women aged 18 to 70 experiencing at least 35 weekly hot flashes, with participants taking Elinzanetant reporting significant decreases in daily symptoms and sleep disturbances compared to placebo.
- Toronto hospital administrator Laurie Legere, 47, described her hot flashes as "really disruptive" to work and sleep; she has already secured a prescription for Elinzanetant after finding previous off-label treatments ineffective.
- Dr. Dave Cescon of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre stated the approval "will be very helpful" for patients whose symptoms were historically unaddressed, though a Bayer spokesperson noted on Monday that the drug is not currently publicly funded in Canada.
