John Healey has set out detailed plans to spread growth more widely across the UK ahead of his first Budget, outlining measures aimed at supporting regional economic development and reducing the concentration of prosperity in London and the South East.
In his first speech as Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey promised to keep public spending under control, but could not rule out further tax increases. The Prime Minister, however, promises increases in social benefits and more money for defence, while the national debt is increasing by almost £370 million a day.
