Military homes to be renovated in £9bn government plan

The £9bn investment targets refurbishment or replacement of 14,000 homes and addresses long-standing complaints about damp and heating, officials said.

  • On Monday, Defence Secretary John Healey unveiled a £9bn plan to modernise almost all of the Ministry of Defence's 47,700 homes for military families, describing it as `the biggest renewal in more than 50 years`.
  • Complaints from serving military personnel and their families pushed action after 2022 BBC reporting of damp, mould, and heating failures, and a Commons defence committee last year found two-thirds of homes needed extensive refurbishment or rebuilding.
  • Through the acquisition and refurbishment programme, the MoD will buy 36,347 military houses from Annington Homes and upgrade about 14,000 homes with new kitchens, bathrooms, and heating systems.
  • The government says surplus MoD land could deliver 100,000 new homes and officials say the deal would save millions in rent and maintenance costs.
  • Despite earlier funding, a December report released last year found those problems `still exist`, highlighting the need for a long-term programme for military families.
