Tampa Bay Law Enforcement Agencies Discuss Operation to Crack Down on Speeding
GEORGIA, FLORIDA, ALABAMA, SOUTH CAROLINA, TENNESSEE, JUL 14 – The weeklong campaign aims to reduce speeding and aggressive driving that caused 1,604 deaths in 2023 across the five southeastern states, officials said.
- From July 14 to July 20, Operation Southern Slow Down launches in five southeastern states, targeting speeding and aggressive driving through increased law enforcement.
- With speeding cited in nearly a third of traffic deaths, federal crash data showed a 13% rise in southeast fatal crashes in 2023 to 1,604 deaths, attributed to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- According to the Tennessee Office of Highway Safety, 51% of motorcycle riders aged 21 to 24 involved in fatal crashes were speeding, while Buddy Lewis said `You’re almost three times more likely to be involved in a fatal or serious-injury crash when you’re speeding`.
- The Twiggs County Sheriff's Office warned `drivers will see more troopers and deputies on Georgia roads throughout the campaign`, while Florida Highway Patrol Colonel Gary Howze II said `Operation Southern Slow Down is a united effort to reduce dangerous driving behaviors`.
- Looking ahead, Operation Southern Slow Down aims to reduce fatalities, with officials hoping increased enforcement and public awareness will encourage drivers to make safer choices and prioritize slower speeds.
