Heads or tails? Coin flip decides tie in Wisconsin election
The Village Board of Canvassers used a coin flip after Dalton Davis and Shauna Keel finished tied at 356 votes each, officials said.
On Tuesday, Dalton Davis secured a Village Board seat in Hortonville, Wisconsin, after a coin toss broke a 356-356 tie with Shauna Keel for the final trustee position.
Four candidates vied for three trustee seats; Julie Arendt Vanden Heuvel received 422 votes and Therese Abitz received 405 votes, while Keel and Davis each received 356 votes.
State Statue 5.01 mandates that if two or more candidates receive the same votes, the winner must be chosen by lot, a random, unbiased method officials applied in Hortonville.
Davis revealed he voted for Keel, his competitor, stating, "Yeah, I even voted for her, just cause I know she did good last term." He expressed disappointment at her loss.
The Village Board of Canvassers assigned heads to Keel and tails to Davis before flipping; the coin landed tails, granting Davis the third and final trustee position.
