Head who changed term dates to go on cruise banned

The panel said she manipulated term dates for a cruise and misused school funds for a car, karaoke machine and TVs, citing dishonesty and poor integrity.

  • Joy Ballard, former headteacher of Ryde Academy on the Isle of Wight, has been banned indefinitely from teaching by the Teaching Regulation Agency after a tribunal found her guilty of unacceptable professional conduct.
  • The panel heard that Ballard adjusted the winter schedule so the school closed December 18, 2023, and did not reopen until January 3, 2024, to accommodate a cruise. Witnesses provided what the panel called "cogent evidence" that the calendar shift was manufactured for her holiday.
  • Beyond calendar changes, Ballard misused school funds to purchase a Peugeot 5008 costing £30,000, karaoke machines, and camping equipment while operating a "chaotic" cash management system. She also used the vehicle for personal trips, including a family holiday to France.
  • Marc Cavey, a decision-maker at the Teaching Regulation Agency, stated Ballard's conduct was "dishonest and lacking in integrity." The panel concluded she showed limited insight, noting she admitted she would "do some of it again" if faced with the same circumstances.
  • Prohibited from teaching in England's schools, sixth-form colleges, and children's homes, Ballard faces an indefinite ban. She may apply to have the order reviewed after two years, starting June 23, 2028, subject to a further panel review.
