He escaped the North Tower on 9/11 from the 83rd floor | His story 25 years later
A firefighter led Benjamin and others down from the 78th-floor sky lobby, and he later kept mementos from the attack 25 years later.
- Today marks 25 years since the Sept 11 attacks, when Jeff Benjamin of Manchester, New Hampshire, survived after American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower where he worked for Swiss Re America on the 83rd floor.
- Recalling that morning, Benjamin told WMUR: "I'm watching, I looked up, and right before the plane hit the building, I could see into the cockpit." He watched the jet approach on what seemed a beautiful day before impact.
- Navigating to the 78th-floor sky lobby to escape the impact zone, Benjamin credits a New York City Fire Department member with guiding his group to safety down the stairwell, describing stepping over bodies in the lobby.
- Reaching ground level, Benjamin described the scene as "a war zone," with debris raining down. He made his way to Union Station, then messaged his family in New Hampshire that he was safe.
- Now 64, Benjamin reflects on how the experience reshaped his priorities: "It changed how I felt about certain things. And it made me more focused on what's truly important." Twenty-five years later, family remains his anchor.
